Lang Lang Inspires at the Southbank Centre
2011 marks the sixtieth anniversary of London's Southbank Centre, and to celebrate young pianists between the ages of five and twenty-four are being offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on the stage of the Royal Festival Hall with superstar Chinese pianist Lang Lang. The concert will take place on Sunday 22nd May and applications are welcomed from pianists of all abilities, with some travel support available for anyone living outside the capital.
I shall be encouraging a number of my students to enter, and if you would like to join them you'll need to submit a video of yourself playing a piece of your choice. Recordings should be no longer than three minutes, and can be filmed using a video camera, a webcam or even a camera phone. Lang Lang will then choose one hundred lucky people to join him on stage. The deadline for entries is February 28th. Winners will be notified by March 15th, and sent the music they need to learn.
Entrants aged between five and twelve will need to send their videos to the Southbank Centre, along with a consent form signed by a parent or guardian (please contact me if you would like a copy). Entries should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org, along with your name, postal address, e-mail address and a contact telephone number. If you are aged between thirteen and twenty-four, you can apply directly by visiting http://langlanginspires.ning.com.
The concert is the climax of a one week residency at the Southbank Centre. On Tuesday 17th May Lang Lang will give a solo recital, performing Schubert's Sonata in B flat (D. 960) and Chopin's 12 Études (Op. 25). On Thursday 19th May he will perform with violinist Vadim Repin and cellist Mischa Maisky, and on Saturday 21st May he will join forces with the Youth Orchestra of Bahia under conductor Ilyich Rivas. Their programme will include works by Chopin and Gershwin.
Tickets for all performances can be purchased online, or by calling the Southbank Centre Ticket Office on 0844 875 0073.
